about me
My name is Julian Hood, but you can also call me Jules.
I’m a multidisciplinary designer — with my writing degree, I work as a User Experience Writer (Content Designer). I’m now adding certifications in User Experience/User Interface Design.
I’m also a poet. In poetry, I start with the ordinary — a flowing river. Using language, I leap from the ordinary to the extraordinary — nourishment the Kennebec River has brought my community, my parents before me, and their parents before them. The creatures who live in and around the river banks. Springtime hikes with my grandfather to pick fiddleheads — edible baby ferns — from river banks. The hardships of a middle school whitewater rafting trip, and the friendships forged thereafter.
As a designer, I start with the ordinary too. A small pain point, an opportunity for improvement, a novel idea that just needs some love to become real. Using principles of User Experience, psychology, and design, I take that same poetic leap.
On the other side, an extraordinary experience — whether that means it’s efficient, innovative or just really, really fun.
I’m located in Pittsburgh, but I was born in Maine. You’ll find my resume in the top menu bar, with all the specifics, but here’s a quick summary. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2014 with a dual degree in English Literature and Poetry Writing.
I’ve worked in many arenas since then, from customer service to a gaming startup to a journey through many roles in financial services. Throughout all of those experiences, I’ve experienced an (at times inconvenient) obsession with making experiences better for myself, my colleagues and my customers.
In my free time, you can probably find me roasting coffee, playing Fallout New Vegas yet again, brewing coffee, swimming, drinking coffee, cycling, planning zany Nicolas Cage holidays with my friends… or just thinking about coffee.
